Impulsive Thought : Why Do We Need Education ?
Prompt : What is the function of education ?
I bumped into a
magazine in my room, and then opened it, found something interesting talking
about the function of education. Now, come to think about it, I never really
contemplate regarding this matter.
In my opinion,
education has two kind of functions in the basis of its own definition. First,
if we defined education as a process to get us noticed as an ‘educated’ person,
then I guess the function of it would be as something which makes someone known
as educated person in the end. For
example, you finished your high school years afterward you got a
degree/certificate, finally you have become an educated person for studying
12-years long. Imagine this is somekind like a tool which helps us to get known
or noticed as educated.
Second, it’s
completely different if we defined it as a process to learn something. From
this definition, I can say that the function of education would be as something
which makes someone knowing something from not knowing anything, basically. It’s
more vast function, we can say to make us know how to think critically, how to
differentiate right or wrong, or even how to behave morally. We can see that
this function, it’s a lot more related to its process, and we basically can
tell everyone educated if we used this term. For instance, someone have
education in sewing clothes, then we can assume he/she has proper knowledge
about sewing after education even thou he/she has never attended school, so
eventually, he/she still can be called educated in terms of sewing. We can
illustrate this function as a tool to develop us in many ways by getting to
know something from no knowledge.
If I may to
summarize my own thoughts, so basically we can say it more makes sense to pick
the second definition compared to the first one, but looking at the current
reality of my own country, I guess first definition could be acceptable as
well, literally. Personally, I agree more into the second one of course, I
believe education is a process to help us getting our maximum development in
terms of not only intelligence but also character. You can dream of a world
with full of intelligent people but no morality there, that would be cruel, and
also vice versa. So I guess, that is the true function of education.
P.S. : The
written thing above was purely existed from the author’s authentic random
thoughts, not from the basis of researches, or opinion of others. Well just to
avoid those people who would like to judge thing before knowing the real thing
and to state that nobody’s perfect, basically. Last, the author does have a
freedom to give opinion right? Thank you.
Pondering : Success Definition ?
Reaching a
successful life is something that most people or possibly everyone dreams of.
However, in my opinion, there are a lot of successes in this life, we can say a
lot of people reaching that, but at the same page, we cannot say everyone
successful. Mostly, we merely can say that success is defined by either power,
money, or simply popularity. But still, what factors do actually make someone
having a successful life? When can we say someone successful? I wonder.
So my curiosity
got in my mind, I googled some definitions about success. Here they are :
Oxford’s definition
:
Merriam Webster’s
definition :
If you see it above, it’s completely almost the
same definition which I have thought before, and Business Insiders even agreed
that this definition wasnt enough yet. Thus, they mentioned several kind of
definitions there, and it varied from not simply having power and money to
success is one’s personal choice. Moreover, I read it on fairfaxcountyeda.org,
success has more definitions than ever based on Ms. Linda Seger pointed through
her intriguing thoughts there. Inc on the other hand, defined success by simply
listing executives from business world which I found kind of distinct from my
expectation.
Overall, after
skimming to all these articles and Mr.Google’s findings, I can barely say that
success is completely one’s life fulfillments resulting from one’s key life
realizations, and it can be anything from power, money, making change, and many
others. Nevertheless, I dont really like this summary which I have made to be honest cause I dont find any researches
talking about life success’ metrics, but hopefully later, I would definitely update this if I found one,
or I guess my curiosity is way too general for a research topic.
